Introduction
I am interested in understanding and predicting the impact of targeted control measures on the dynamics of infections. I graduated from Wageningen University in 1992 and obtained my doctoral degree at the same university in 1998. Since 1997, I have been analyzing the dynamics of infectious diseases at RIVM. I became head of the RIVM department of Modelling of Infectious Diseases in 2005. Since 2015, I have been working at LUMC.
Scientific research
I advise the Dutch government and international organizations on infectious disease control. In recent years, my research has focused on three themes: real-time estimation of key epidemiological variables of infectious disease outbreaks, characterization of contact networks using information on social contact data, and using epidemic models to interpret molecular sequence data of pathogens.
