Peripheral Nervous System
Research groups work on the pathophysiology and development of therapeutic strategies for muscular diseases including Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy (D/BMD), Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD), and Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy (LGMD) and synaptic diseases include myasthenia gravis and Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome. Other groups in this subtheme study therapeutic options after traumatic brachial plexus and peripheral nerve injury in both children and adults and the search for mechanisms and successful treatments of neuropathic pain caused by nerve damage. Hearing loss following sensory degenerative disease is studied, aiming to identify disease mechanisms, perform natural history studies, develop drugs and biomarkers, and improve prediction modelling and cochlear implants.
All these studies have the ultimate aim to optimize clinical care for patients with nerve, synaps and muscle conditions.
The Ambassadors of the subtheme are Dr.Pietro Spitali, Dr.Maaike van Putten, Dr.Justus Groen
